Jagten indledes

Der styrtdykkes mod musvågen

Omringningen begynder

Der er forsat daglig aktivitet på ringmærkningsstationen;

Og bagved skrivebordet foregår der også ting;
Data indskrives

hjemmeside arbejde
PR virksomhed

End of spring season

Today has finished the spring ringing season and also my stay in Gedser ends. It has been two months that have passed so quickly and which I've enjoyed so much working with birds in a great place with very nice people. From here, I would like to thank to Gert, Louis, Benny and Hans since they treated me great and I really enjoyed with their company.

About the birds, we had a good day to dismiss the season with a total of 14 birds

Common Redstart: 1
Reed Warbler: 1
Icterine Warbler: 1
Common Whitethroat: 5
Blackcap: 3
Chaffinch: 1
Linnet: 2

Also today the GFU has joined to activities that have been take place in Gedser Odde and we made one hour of open house. The lighthouse was also open for visitors so I use to take a photo of the station from the top of the lighthouse.

I’d like to say goodbye with the wishes to go back.

Yesterday rain, today wind

With a very windy day the catch of birds was almost impossible. I decided to setup some of the nets that there were more sheltered from the wind, but I had no luck I had only two recaptures from this season; one common Whitethroat and one Greenfinch.

Tomorrow will be the last day of standardized spring season, so I hope to have a nice last day.

Only two birds

Although the weather forecast showed rain at time to setup nets, it did not start to rain until 6:00. It was very slight and allowed me to continue with the session until 10:30. But those efforts have not been rewarded as only two birds have been ringed; an Icterine warbler and a common Whitethroat.

Very few

There is not much to tell about this morning. The day has been very quiet with only six ringed birds corresponding to the following:

Robin: 1
Common Whitethroat: 1
Blackcap: 2
Linnet: 2

The weather forecast shows for tomorrow a slight rain at time to open the nets, so we will see if I am able to do or not the session.

One day more…

A normal morning with few captures again and with the Greenfinch as a highlight bird of the day with four captures from eleven.

Regarding to the observations of birds, this morning I could see a Turtle dove, which if I remember correctly is an uncommon species here in Gedser Odde. Here is a testimonial photo of the bird that was resting behind the highest net.

Last week

Today we started the last week of spring season. I started the day doing something unusual for me; I have had to extract one bat that fell in the highest net.  The bat was not entangled in the net and I could extract it without any problem.

About birds I have had more or less the same situation as in previous days. Little number of captures, birds with incubation patch but not yet birds from this year.

Icterine Warbler: 1
Garden warbler: 2
Blackcap: 1
Willow Warbler: 3
Greenfinch: 1

Less than yesterday

The morning has been calmer than yesterday and I only ringed 7 birds. It seems impossible that three days ago I had 70 and today only 7. Anyway, the good point of the day has been the capture of a new specie for the year; the Eurasian Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris)

Quite calm this morning with only 9 birds in the nets and one more extra that I captured by hand. When I was going back to the lab I saw how a Barn Swallow came inside the lab and then it rested on the window without bump and then I could trap it easily.

A new foreign ring.

The day was similar than yesterday but with less amount of birds, for today 70. Like yesterday the most ringed bird of day has been the Willow warbler with 38. Among all the birds there was one with a foreign ring: this time from Portugal (I hope they aren’t always ringing upside downJ)
And it seems that is the first control of Portuguese bird here at GFU. Also add, that Hans told me yesterday that one of the Nightjars has been recaptured at Sicily.

And here there is a picture of another bird that I had this morning and that is the first of season.

The Barred Warbler

Undoubtedly the highlight bird of the morning has been the Barred Warbler. Coming from a country where  the diversity of  Sylvia warblers is high, this specie is extremely rare with only two records, so ring this bird means a great pleasure to me.

Photo made by Per Bo Hansen and taken from the GFU gallery.

Besides this bird, we had another 60 birds; being the most abundant the Pied Flycatchers with 14 ringed birds. And also to remark the Sand Martins that have been feeding around the double high net and finally we ringed six birds which is a pretty large number.

2nd Greenish Warbler.

After we had had the first capture of Greenish warbler at GFU three days ago today we had, early morning, the second one. In contrast of three days ago, today we had almost no wind and hot weather.

But that isn’t all, the morning got more exiting when I could catch a grey Partridge. Evidently, it did not fall in the mist nets of the garden, it fell in the Lark mist nets that we have in the field opposite to the house.  I saw it flying to the field and I had to do a steeplechase to trap it. The last grey Partridge ringed here was eleven years ago.

Lesser Whitethroat: 2
