This morning we woke to a predictably wet and wind swept garden. Having returned to bed for a couple of hours and waited for the weather to clear, Chris and Denise popped up a few nets in and around the garden. Resulting in 16 new birds.
Rødhals (Robin) 2
Rødstjert (Redstart) 1
Sangdrossel (Song Thrush) 1
Gærdesanger (Lesser Whitethroat) 1
Sydlig Gransanger (Chiffchaff) 1
Løvsanger (Willow warbler) 8
Grå Fluesnapper (Spotted Flycatcher) 2
Not bad given the recent easterly winds, inhibiting efforts.
Out on the tip from 06:40 - 16:00 myself and Louis had quite the duck day; in low visibility like today, ducks and waders often cling tight to the coastline (presumably to navigate). Over 3500 duck went down in my notebook, Louis definitely recorded a few more than me including 6 Troldand (Tufted duck), the day's only, before I arrived.
Pibeand (Wigeon) 2371
Sortand (Common Scoter) 698
Skeand (Shoveler) 219
Spidsand (Pintail) 131
Ederfugl (Eider) 88 (86 males, 2 females)
Krikand (Teal) 71
Fløjlsand (Velvet Scoter) 14
Toppet Skallesluger (Red-breasted Merganser) 9
Knarand (Gadwall) 5
Gråand (Mallard) 5
Knortegås (Brent Goose) 5
Bjergand (Scaup) 2 (Females/immature)
Atlingand (Garganey) 1 (Adult male)
Other than ducks, the migration was fairly quiet, raptors were represented by 2 Lærkefalk (Hobby), 2 Dværgfalk (Merlin) and a single Hvepsevåge (Honey Buzzard).
Waders slow with only 2 Almindelig Ryle (Dunlin), 4 Hjejle (Golden Plover), 2 Strandskade (Oystercatcher) and 2 Småspove (Whimbrel)
Terns and gulls were in small numbers but good variety.
Splitterne (Sandwich Tern) 32 (23 ad, 9 Juv)
Fjordterne (Common Tern) 8 (Ad, 7 Juv)
Havterne (Arctic Tern) 4 (Ad, 3 Juv)
Sortterne (Black Tern) 1 (Juv)
Sildemåge (Lesser Black-backed gull) 3 (2 1st calendar year, 1 adult.)
Sølvmåge (Herring gull) many around, non evidently migrating.
Dværgmåge (Little Gull) 49 (good mixture of Adult and 1st calendar year birds, few 2nd calendar year)
Hættemåge (Black-headed Gull) 1 (2cy+ bird)
Stormmåge (Common Gull) 12 (11 1st calendar year, 1 adult)
fuscus Sildemåge (Baltic Gull) 1 1st calendar year
Middelhavsmåge (Yellow-legged Gull) 1 adult
Very little in the way of passerine migration, with only 135 Gul Vipstjert (Yellow Wagtail), 10 Hvid Vipstjert (White Wagtail), 1 Bjerg Vipstjert (Grey Wagtail), Skovpiber (Tree pipit) 3, Engpiber (Meadow Pipit) 2, Tornirisk (Linnet) 1, 241 Landsvale (Barn swallow), 10 Bysvale (House Martin) and 2 Digesvale (Sand Martin).
A Lille Fluesnapper (Red-breasted Flycatcher) was the best rester at the tip. Fjeldvåge (Rough-legged Buzzard) and Brushane (Ruff) from recent days were around.
Fingers crossed, tomorrow we can fully meet standardised with many birds in the garden.
Craig
