Slow in the garden

It was a quiet morning to start the new month. There were finches calling overhead and a few Goldcrests (Fuglekonge) in the garden but the nets seemed very empty in contrast to the last few days of September.

It grew windier as the morning progressed and nets were closed when we reached the end of standard ringing.

In the early afternoon we went to a sheltered part of the beach to try for Rock Pipits (Skærpiber). Although no birds were caught, we did get to see a fantastic display of flying prowess as a Merlin (Dværgfalk)  tried to chase down a Rock Pipit. Merlins are impressive hunters but the Rock Pipit's ability to evade the predator was amazing.

We were also treated to a very close view of a Red-necked Grebe (Gråstrubet Lappedykker).
