The First Common Whitethroat

Finally the weather has given us respite with a sunny and warm day and even better there were more birds moving around the garden, which led to the busiest morning for the last week: 42 birds ringed and 12 different species. Robin has been the most abundant with 12 individuals banded, so I think that my observation on the last blog was not really accurate ;). Anyway, I just wanted to say that I have the feeling that migration was finally arriving to Gedser Fuglestation instead of birds flying over our garden without stopping as it may have been happening for the last few days.

Our main highlight for today has been the first Common Whitethoat ringed for 2016 and also the second Redstart (female) and another Chiffchaff control from Belgium, being the 4th for this species and the 6th in total. I am pleasantly surprised about the large number of controls we are getting as its the main objective of ringing and it does not happen as often as we would like it!!! Hopefully, we will soon get more information about the life story of this Belgian control, such as when it was ringed and wether or no it has been retrapped before and where,.... .

Common Whitethroat and Common Redstart

As tomorrow is the Spring Openning Day, Hans and Gert have been around helping us with cleaning up the garden, setting up the largest nets I have ever seen!!! and also installing some web cameras on the nest box around the house.  So, you are welcome to join us tomorrow from 8h to 12h. For sure, you will have fun, enjoy and learn a bit more about birds and birding and we can not promise the good weather as today but just crossing fingers for it!!.  We also wish to trap many different species  so you can see a large diversity of them and we may have some nice surprise (we're dreaming of a Wryneck and I think it can be a good day, couldn't it??)

By the way, I forget to say that tomorrow is also my last day  in Spring season at least, and if everything goes as I planned, I will be back here on October ofr 1 or 2 months. I just want to say thanks to everybody for this great opportunity and the best wish for the rest of the season!!!.
